Southwest Pilot Busted in Shocking DUI Arrest Caught on Bodycam
Passengers at Savannah/Hilton Head International thought they were boarding an ordinary flight to Chicago — instead, their pilot was about to be led away in handcuffs.
On January 15, 2025, David Allsop, a 52-year-old Southwest Airlines captain, was stopped just before takeoff after a TSA agent reportedly smelled alcohol during crew screening. Police bodycam footage, now public, shows officers confronting Allsop at the jet bridge, asking when he last drank. He admitted to drinking the night before — “about 10 hours ago” — but quickly grew defensive.
When pressed, Allsop reluctantly agreed to a field sobriety test. The footage shows him stumbling through the routine — unable to walk a straight line, failing two of three tests. Officers arrested him on the spot and charged him with DUI.
The fallout was immediate. Flight 3772 to Chicago was delayed nearly five hours while a replacement pilot was found, leaving passengers stranded. The FAA has since revoked Allsop’s pilot certification, ending a career that once included service in the U.S. Air Force and nearly two decades at Southwest.
Southwest Airlines issued a statement stressing that “nothing is more important than safety,” confirming Allsop was removed from duty.
