How Gen Z Fought Marxists in Nepal
In 2025, Generation Z in Nepal launched widespread protests against government corruption and a ban on social media platforms. Their organized efforts led to significant political changes.
In September 2025, large-scale protests erupted across Nepal, spearheaded by Generation Z students and young citizens. The protests, triggered by a government ban on multiple social media platforms, also addressed rampant corruption and nepotism within the government. The movement quickly gained momentum, calling for sweeping changes, including the overthrow of the existing government and restoration of social media platforms.
The discontent among the youth was fueled by the government's display of wealth and alleged mismanagement of public funds. As protests escalated, they were marked by violence against public officials, and vandalism of government and political buildings became widespread. The protests reached their peak on 8 September when large gatherings occurred in Kathmandu, organized by Hami Nepal, an NGO.
The protests were initially peaceful but turned violent after a single act of vandalism by a protester. In response, the government cracked down harshly, using live ammunition against the protesters. Despite a curfew and the government's efforts to quell the unrest, the demonstrations continued to grow.
The protests culminated in significant political upheaval. On 9 September, Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli resigned, and by 12 September, Sushila Karki was appointed as interim Prime Minister. The youth-led movement successfully pressured the government to lift the social media ban and set a path towards new elections in 2026.
Throughout the protests, Generation Z effectively used digital coordination via platforms like Discord to organize and mobilize protesters. They conducted online discussions to select an interim leader, ultimately nominating Sushila Karki. The protests resulted in at least 72 deaths, with more than 2,100 injuries reported.
The aftermath of the events saw the interim government pledging monetary compensation to the families of the deceased and calling for unity to rebuild the nation. The protests underscored the power of digital activism and the potential of Generation Z to influence political change, cementing their role as formidable agents of reform in Nepal.
